Tra… Tra… Tra…“Tra, tra, tra, tra…”
“Oye girla, vamos pa’ la disco,
Que en la pista te voy a dar
Tremendo pellizco”.
Tumpu pum... tu pupu pum…
The night was young, the music was blasting; the colorful neon lights were gleaming on, and the whole room of the Stargate Discotheque was ready for more reggaetón music. It was a Wednesday’s ladies night. The place was crowded as Hector and Tito, two of the top-rap singers of the moment, were performing live on stage.
Tumpupu pum… tumpupu pum
The month of May was almost over and the young crowd of mostly high school and university students was cheering on the moment. They knew that this “Good bye Party” symbolized the end of another school year and the beginning of the two-month summer vacations.
Wilfredo and his senior friends from Ramon Vilá Mayo High School were at the party having a good time. But, Wilfredo was simply waiting… waiting by the entrance door… waiting for Madeline, the girl he had met at Plaza Las Americas store about two weeks ago. It was love at first sight as he recalled it.
Madeline was so beautiful and gorgeous. She was a curly brunette with the perfect body and the cutest face. That day, when they talked, he fell in love with her, and he noticed that she was also very fond of him. They ate together and they agreed to meet at the party on Wednesday night.
It was almost 11:00 P.M. and no signs of Madeline. Wilfredo was becoming desperate while his friends were dancing and partying along. He kept waiting…
“Hey man, forget about her! I told you before… that white rich “girla” was not going to show up here. She’s too good for us” Luis said.
“Come on Luis, I know she’s an uptown girl and all that, but Madeline is different. She liked me, I know she liked me. She promised me that she will be here tonight.” Wilfredo replied.
“Well, see for yourself. The party will soon be over and here you are all alone. There are many girls in here asking for you man. Come on… forget her!”
“It’s all right… don’t worry about me…I’ll be all right. Thanks Luis.”
The night went on and the party was finally over. Wilfredo and his friends went home. They were all very happy and joyful except for Wilfredo. He was very sad and disappointed. The next day he went to school and, after finishing one exam that he had pending, he took the AMA public bus straight to Plaza Las Americas. A little later, he was at the clothing store and he found Madeline in there. She was dressed as usual with her stylish and expensive clothes looking astonishingly beautiful.
“Hey, hello Madeline. What happened to you last night? I was there waiting for you all night long, but you never showed up.”
“Oh look, Wilfredo… I’m very sorry. I couldn’t go. My parents didn’t let me go. They don’t want me to go to those places where they play reggaetón music. They think you guys are bad guys with big necklaces, guns, and loud music. They think that your music is vulgar and in the lyrics all they hear is Tra, Tra, Tra… “Oh I see. So do you feel the same about me?”
“Oh, no, not at all Wilfredo. But maybe we can go to other places.”
“Yeah, I could go to any place you want! But it would be nice if you could also go to the places I like. Madeline... listen… the places, the music… they don’t define who you are.”
“I understand but…” “No, you don’t understand… just because I go there and listen to that music doesn’t mean that I carry guns or that I am a gangster or something like that. That music does not define who I am. What define me are my character, my personality, my values, and my attitudes. Really, I don’t think you know me too well… and neither your narrow-minded parents.
The argument went on and after a while, they said goodbye to each other. It was over. Both of them were very sad because they knew that deep down inside, they liked each other but it was an impossible love…
Sometimes, society brings so many boundaries among young hearts in love.
They were both good kids full of dreams and illusions in life. Yet they were so apart by their social status. Wilfredo, a tall handsome guy, an outstanding athlete, and the most intelligent student at his school could have been the dream guy for any girl. But for Madeline, the pretty talented girl from the Maria Reina Private College, his only problem was being a public high school kid with a very poor economic background. That was unacceptable in her uptown-Mercedez Benz neighborhood. Prejudice and peer pressure among social classes were always present.
Time passed by and Wilfredo with high honors from high school. He went to study civil engineering at the Mayaguez U.P.R. Campus. After three years of hard work, dedication, and big economic sacrifices, he was the top student of his class. There were lots of scholarships and college opportunities being offered to him. He was also the captain of the university volleyball team. Life was fully blossoming for him. He was already a grown up man with the brightest future ahead of him.
One day, during Christmas vacations, he found Madeline and her family strolling around the Paseo La Princesa in Old San Juan City. When she finally recognized him, she couldn’t believe it. Wilfredo had grown taller, stronger, and was much more handsome than before. Madeline introduced him to her parents and sister, and they talked about many topics while having coffee together.
Madeline and her parents soon learned about Wilfredo’s promising career. He also learned how Madeline had to settle down for another occupation since she couldn’t handle her expected medicine career… it was too much for her. Her parents kept quiet. They finished their coffees and Wilfredo was about to leave. ..
“Hey, listen Madeline. Your friend here Wilfredo... is indeed a great gentleman and a very good man. Why don’t we invite him to have dinner withus… let’s say… tomorrow! Madeline father said.
“Oh, absolutely dad! I think it’s a great idea. It’s fantastic! What do you say Wilfredo?” “Oh thanks to both of you… but I’m very sorry, I can’t. Tomorrow night, I have a date with my girlfriend Rita. We’re going the Stargate Discotheque to dance regaettón music. You know… the music in which you sing…. Tra… Tra…Tra…”
Madeline and her parents stood there speechless. Wilfredo was smiling of joy as he cheerfully said goodbye to everyone. Tears rolled down by Madeline’s cheeks as she looked at the handsome young man walking away from her through El Paseo La Princesa. Then, she turned her scornful look to her parents… and they very well knew what she meant with that look.
